Depot electrification

A pioneer in depot electrification globally

Kinetic is building future-ready networks of zero-emission bus depots, with the largest presence in Australasia and expanding capability through our Go-Ahead operations globally.

From Australia and New Zealand’s first purpose-built fully electric bus depot on the Gold Coast, to the region’s largest in New Lynn, Auckland, and Europe’s first bus depot converted to 100% electric at Waterloo in London, we design and operate infrastructure that enables cities to transition public transport at scale.

Across 16 zero-emission depots powering more than 350 electric buses in Australia and New Zealand - alongside additional facilities across the UK and beyond - Kinetic sets the benchmark for depot systems that deliver operational efficiency, resilience and seamless integration with emerging technologies.

Kinetic is turning ambitious decarbonisation goals into practical, scalable infrastructure solutions that deliver cleaner, more reliable public transport for communities worldwide.

First-of-its kind overhead gantry charging

Kinetic has transformed our Glenfield depot with New Zealand’s first large-scale overhead gantry charger, enabling safe, efficient and high-volume charging within the existing depot footprint. Combined with seven new ground-mounted chargers and smart off-peak energy management, the depot is now configured to grow electric operations while minimising demand on the local grid.

The Glenfield upgrade brings Kinetic’s network to five fully electrified depots across Auckland, collectively supporting 174 zero-emission buses – more than two-thirds of the city’s electric fleet. As part of this rollout, 31 new zero-emission buses have replaced diesel vehicles at Glenfield, marking a significant step in Auckland’s Mission Electric programme and the city’s goal of a fully zero-emission fleet by 2035.

Award-winning depot electrification

Kinetic strengthened Melbourne’s transition to zero-emission transport with major upgrades to its Sunshine West and Heatherton depots – an effort recognised with the Premier’s Sustainability Award. The sites house new charging infrastructure, undercover bays and a 200kW solar system, with bus charging powered entirely by renewable energy.

The investment supports the rollout of 24 new electric buses across Kinetic’s network in Melbourne, part of a 36-bus commitment with the Victorian Government. As operator of a third of the city’s public bus network, Kinetic is helping deliver quieter, cleaner and more comfortable journeys while supporting Victoria’s goal of net zero emissions by 2050.

Australasia's largest all-electric bus depot

Kinetic’s New Lynn depot has cemented West Auckland as home to Australasia’s largest all-electric bus facility, with 86 zero-emission buses operating from the site. Supported by 44 advanced charging stations and energy-smart technology, the depot is one of eight electric sites enabling Kinetic’s growing New Zealand ZEB fleet.

The New Lynn upgrade sits at the centre of Auckland’s largest-ever bus transformation in partnership with Auckland Transport. Kinetic’s 174-strong electric fleet in Auckland is expected to reduce emissions by more than 10,000 tonnes of CO₂ every year, supporting New Zealand’s mandate for fully decarbonised urban buses by 2035.

One of UK's largest bus charging hubs

Go-Ahead has created a major electric bus charging hub at its Cowley House depot in Oxford, with 104 high-power chargers installed to support the city’s first large-scale fleet of zero-emission buses. The 8MW connection allows every bus to charge overnight and deliver more than 170 miles of daily range, forming part of the city’s wider Energy Superhub Oxford programme.

Supported through a partnership between Go-Ahead, Oxfordshire County Council and the UK Government’s ZEBRA funding scheme, the project is cutting emissions, improving local air quality and supporting Oxfordshire’s ambition to become a net-zero county.

With complementary innovations such as large-scale battery storage and private-wire charging networks, the Oxford project stands as one of the most ambitious depot electrification efforts in the UK. The pace and scale of the transformation was recognised at the 2024 UK Green Business Awards, with Go-Ahead winning the ‘Transport Project of the Year’ category.
