Every year millions of passenger journeys are made across Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga, Wellington, and Christchurch on our urban bus services. At the heart of it is Kinetic’s Operations Control Centre (OCC).
“Our OCC is the only one of its kind in the country, and we’re really proud of the innovation and expertise that happens here,” says John Lai, General Manager Operations Performance at Kinetic New Zealand.
“It’s an unseen but vital hub in the smooth running of our bus services across every urban region we operate in, from early-morning commuter runs to late-night services.”
Until five years ago, operational control across Kinetic’s depot network was managed independently. To enhance reliability, safety, and efficiency for both passengers and drivers, best practice and insights from Kinetic’s global network were adopted, leading to the establishment of a unified, nationwide OCC based in Māngere, South Auckland.
“Bringing all our transport specialists together in one location has allowed the team to coordinate trips across our urban network in real time,” continues John.
“Our OCC team come from a range of backgrounds. From emergency response call centres and fleet logistics to experienced drivers who’ve moved into operational management.
Together, they form a high-performance unit dedicated to supporting drivers on the ground and ensuring passengers experience a safe and reliable service.”
The OCC operates 22 hours a day from Sunday to Thursday and 24 hours on Fridays and Saturdays. A rostered team of 15 specialists monitor routes, manage resources to quickly alleviate congestion or respond to breakdowns and accidents, helping ensure passengers get where they need to be, even when things don’t go to plan.
The centre is designed with multiple layers of resilience to ensure services can continue operating under a wide range of conditions.
John says one of the most frequent questions the OCC team hears is: How can someone in Māngere understand the challenges on my local route?
The answer lies in regional specialisation. Each OCC specialist manages a set of regional routes and works closely with local depot teams.
“For our OCC to work well, it's essential that our team maintains strong relationships with drivers, who provide valuable local insight. We do this through regular ride-alongs, depot visits, and team exchanges that ensures everyone stays connected to the local conditions and customer.”
John says stepping into the control centre, and watching the team work in real-time across New Zealand, is truly something quite special.
“When we first started making plans for a centralised team, it felt quite futuristic. But it has been an investment that has allowed us to continuously improve our processes, which in turn has improved our drivers’ day to day experience and made our services safer and more reliable for our passengers.”
The OCC might sit quietly in South Auckland, but it’s the beating heart of Kinetic New Zealand’s urban bus network. With a team of experts that keep the wheels turning, helping people across the country get to where they need to be.
