Behind the Wheel: Dragica’s story of small moments and big differences

For Hamilton bus driver Dragica "Gaga" Jovanovic, becoming a bus driver has been one of the best decisions she's ever made.

Originally from Serbia, Dragica moved to New Zealand with her husband and daughter 12 years ago. Last year, she joined Kinetic through the Women Up Front program, looking for a career where every day would bring something different.

She found exactly that.

"I discovered how much I enjoy connecting with people and the challenges the job brings, as not every day is the same," she says.

"It is also an opportunity to build new skills and prove that women can succeed in this role."

For Dragica, the role quickly became about more than driving. Every passenger, she believes, deserves to feel safe, respected and welcome. For those who need a little extra support, she knows the smallest gestures can make the biggest difference.

"When someone who may need extra support comes on my bus, the first thing on my mind is to make their journey safe and enjoyable," she says.

"Every person is different; therefore, I need to adapt to their needs. I greet them first. I make sure the bus is properly lowered and the ramp is safe. I don't move until I'm sure they are comfortable and their brakes are on.

"I want my passengers to feel welcome and safe on my bus, and a few extra moments of care can make a big difference."

One passenger has left a lasting impression.

A 10-year-old boy living with complex health challenges. Over time, what began as a friendly greeting grew into a genuine friendship.

"Whenever he comes on my bus, I always greet him with a big smile and fist bump," Dragica says.

"His mum told me about his hobby of making earrings and key rings. I wanted to support him, so I raised money to help him buy materials. Seeing him happy is my biggest reward."

Experiences like these have shaped the way Dragica approaches her role.

"A passenger with disabilities taught me that being a bus driver is not just about driving a bus," she says.

"It's about building relationships, showing kindness and making people feel valued. Small acts like a smile, a fist bump or even a little bit of encouragement will make their day better and mine too."

It's this approach that recently saw Dragica recognised with the Spirit of Service Award at her Hamilton depot's quarterly Rewards and Recognition ceremony. The award followed consistent feedback from passengers, particularly members of Hamilton's disability community, who shared the positive difference she makes to their journeys.

Receiving the award was an honour. But for Dragica, the greatest reward remains the same as it always has been; knowing she's made someone's day just a little easier.

"I feel privileged and honoured. Helping passengers who need extra assistance, and knowing those small moments make a real difference to their lives, means so much to me," she says.

"I'm very proud of what I've achieved since joining Kinetic through Women Up Front, and I'm proud of the uniform I wear and the company I represent. This job gives me a real sense of purpose, and I love serving my community."
