In 2023, Bimel Sasi said “yes” to a job offer half a world away from his hometown of Kerala, India.
The move meant leaving familiarity behind, but it opened the door to an opportunity in Aotearoa New Zealand that would two years later lead to permanent residency.
With support from Kinetic, Bimel secured an Accredited Employer Work Visa and financial assistance to relocate. When he arrived in Auckland, not only was he stepping into a new country, but a new chapter of life. Within two months, his wife and son had joined him, and his family began to build their life in Aotearoa.
Although Bimel had previous experience as a bus driver in India, working in New Zealand required a new set of licences. Kinetic supported him to gain the required licensing before he began a four-week training period to prepare for taking on his own routes in New Zealand’s biggest, and busiest, city.
Operating out East from the Panmure Depot, Bimel quickly established himself as a valued member of the team. In his first few months, he was recognised twice for his service and received certificates of appreciation, a significant achievement while still adjusting to a new country and workplace.
Over time, Bimel has built both confidence and consistency in his role. He is known for being a reliable and friendly driver and has strong connections with the community he serves. He is quick to support other depots when needed, and his knowledge of Auckland’s routes, including school services, means he can seamlessly step into different runs – from Papakura to New Lynn and everywhere in between.
Bimel has also continually embraced opportunities to develop his skills, most recently completing tutor training and guiding a trio of new drivers through their first few weeks behind the wheel.
“Teaching others helped me to learn even more about my job,” he says.
“It feels great to be able to share my knowledge and support colleagues who are new to the role.”
After nearly two years of living and working in New Zealand, his focus turned to securing permanent residency for his family. Together, they worked through the process, and when the decision came, it came quickly. Within a month, the family had been granted residency, marking a major milestone and providing long-term security for their future.
“Moving to New Zealand was a big decision, especially as it meant spending a few weeks away from my family, but being able to bring them here so quickly and build a life together has meant everything. The support I received made a real difference.”
Looking back, he describes the journey as one of growth, both professionally and personally.
From Kerala to Auckland, Bimel has turned a job opportunity into a long-term future - building a career, supporting his family, and playing a vital role in connecting the city he now calls home.
